Students learn how to move from biblical text to faithful, clear, and compelling expository communication.

Course Topics

  • The case for expository preaching — Explore what expository preaching is and begin learning how to find, limit, and study a biblical text.

  • From text to exegetical idea — Learn how to identify the topic, exegetical outline, and central idea of a passage.

  • Presenting the text’s structure and meaning — Present the assigned text’s topic, outline, and exegetical/theological idea for feedback.

  • From exegesis to sermon purpose — Learn how to analyze the text, seek spiritual formation through it, and clarify sermon purpose and application.

  • Presenting purpose and application — Present the sermon purpose, applications, and homiletical idea for feedback.

  • Shaping the sermon — Learn how to structure the sermon, develop its body, and prepare an effective introduction and conclusion.

  • Manuscript and delivery — Present the sermon introduction and learn how to write and deliver a sermon manuscript.

  • Preaching and evaluation — Preach sermons and receive evaluation.

  • Preaching and evaluation — Continue preaching sermons and receiving evaluation.

  • Preaching and evaluation — Complete sermon presentations and class evaluation.
